2011 US 522 outcrops
Keyser and Tonoloway Formations
Red Bluff Granite Complex
Brallier and Harrell Formations

I drove along US Route 522 in Fulton and Huntingdon Counties in Pennsylvania in early April of 2011. There are many great Paleozoic outcrops along the road, which passes through several synclines and anticlines in the Valley and Ridge Province.

The first shot is a roadcut of the Devonian Keyser Formation north of Warfordsburg, in Fulton County. Facing north, and stratigraphic up is to the left.

The next three are roadcuts at Blacklog Narrows, southeast of Orbisonia in Huntingdon County. Bedding is nearly vertical there. One shows a panorama of the Silurian Tuscarora Formation on the east side of the road, so stratigraphic up is to the left. The next shows the Ordovician Juniata Formation on the same side of the road, downsection. The next shows a panorama of the Ordovician Reedsville Formation, on the opposite side of the road, so stratigraphic up is to the right. The contact with the Bald Eagle Formation may be visible at the right edge.

The fifth is a natural outcrop of the Ordovician Bald Eagle Formation at Shade Gap, Huntingdon County. Facing north.

The sixth is a panorama of the Devonian Mahantango Formation in Fulton County near Big Cove Tannery.

The seventh is a panorama of a roadcut through the Devonian Ridgeley Sandstone Member of the Old Port Formation north of Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County. Facing east.
